King Township’s largely rural landscape with active agricultural lands, historic farmsteads, and diverse natural areas creates unique challenges for managing invasive species. The Township has already taken important steps, using tools such as the Clean Yards By-law to address invasive noxious weeds like wild parsnip and giant hogweed on private property.
Building on this foundation, King Township is developing its first comprehensive Invasive Species Strategy, identified as a priority action in both the King Community Climate Action Plan and the 2023–2026 Corporate Strategic Plan. This strategy will guide staff in prioritizing management efforts, responding proactively to emerging threats, and protecting the Township’s natural and agricultural landscapes. The Township is working in partnership with the Invasive Species Centre, with a draft strategy expected in April 2026.
To date, invasive species management on Township-owned lands has focused on public health risks and ecologically sensitive areas. The new strategy represents a shift toward a more coordinated, long-term approach.
Invasive species are non-native plants, animals, or organisms that establish and spread in new environments, often causing ecological, social, or economic harm. Ontario is particularly vulnerable to invasive species due to its diverse geography, connectivity, and rapid growth.
