The Township of King is looking at some new possibilities for recreation and cultural facilities in Nobleton and would like to have your input into the use of municipal properties at 5885 King Road and 19 Old King Road in Nobleton.

Plans include addressing future growth needs through a reimagining the Nobleton Community Lions Park and Nobleton Branch of the King Township Public Library.

King is committed to collaborating with the community to get the best solutions and uses for the Village of Nobleton. This project offers a chance for placemaking and transformation of services in Nobleton, including the library, hall, outdoor pool and park spaces.

Nobleton Branch of the King Township Public Library

The Township is exploring options for the future of the Nobleton Branch of the King Township Public Library. The site requires extensive upgrades and renovations, including an addition, to help to accommodate the expected growth in the community.

One option is to relocate the Nobleton Branch to the same area as the Dr. William Laceby Nobleton Community Centre and Arena as part of a larger campus development.

Nobleton Community Hall

The Nobleton Community Hall needs repair and renovation work to meet legislative requirements. King is examining options as part of this overall project.

Nobleton Lions Outdoor Pool: Alternatives

The Nobleton Lions Outdoor Pool served the community for over 40 years. Due to significant structural deficiencies, the pool is now permanently closed. The physical condition of the pool and the continued national labour shortage hampered the Township’s ability to reopen the pool.

A new aquatic centre will be available at the Township-Wide Recreation Centre in the fall of 2024.

The now-closed aquatic area will be available for other uses. Staff are exploring options for the long-term replacement of this amenity.

Possible New Features and Amenities

In addition to a new library, the Township is exploring installing a wading pool that could double as a refrigerated outdoor ice rink in the winter.

There are also possibilities for new pathways, a pickleball court and an amphitheatre.

Nobleton's transformation is underway, as King Township progresses with the eagerly anticipated Phase II of the Nobleton Recreation and Cultural Campus Project.

In a move that underscored its commitment to enhancing community spaces, King Township Council approved the design and construction of Phase II of the project in October 2023. This ambitious project aims to transform the municipal properties at 5885 King Road and 19 Old King Road in Nobleton into a dynamic community hub, offering a range of amenities and recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

    A good news story

As part of the Nobleton Revitalization Strategy, staff have been negotiating the disposition of lands around the Nobleton Community Lions Park along with the acquisition of additional property on Highway 27. This innovative and creative approach has allowed the Township to dispose of and acquire property in a fiscally responsible manner. The disposition of these properties is vital to funding the property acquisitions and future municipal projects.

Mayor Steve Pellegrini noted that the disposition and acquisition of land provides tremendous value for money, especially in a community with high property values like Nobleton. In the end, the Township was able to acquire almost seven acres of property for $250,000 at a time when single lots in Nobleton can sell for $1.5 million or more.

As well, significant improvements will be made to the entrance at Highway 27 and Old King Road—making the area safer and more accessible for motorists and pedestrians— without having to use tax dollars to build the new infrastructure.

    Engaging the community

Central to the project's success has been the extensive community consultation process undertaken by staff. Through surveys, public information sessions and various communication channels, residents and stakeholders had the opportunity to voice their opinions and suggestions. The feedback received has been instrumental in shaping the project's direction.

    A vision taking shape

The project's design phase is well underway, with a landscape consultant working diligently to translate the community's vision into reality. Key elements of the project, such as the wading pool, amphitheatre, skating rink and pickleball courts, have received overwhelming support from the community. Additionally, the design includes considerations for beach volleyball, a full-sized lit soccer field, formalized walking paths, a dog park and alternate playground equipment, reflecting the diverse interests of Nobleton residents.

    Addressing concerns

While the project has garnered widespread support, concerns have been raised regarding emergency vehicle access, noise from the potential amphitheatre and the future of the Nobleton Community Hall and Women's Institute. To address these concerns, the project team is working diligently to ensure that the design incorporates necessary safety measures, including modifications to the road connecting the parking lots and noise buffering solutions for the amphitheater.

    Looking ahead

Construction is slated to commence in the summer of 2024, marking an exciting milestone for the Nobleton community. Additionally, decisions regarding the future of the Nobleton Library Branch will be made after additional input from the community.

A decision on the Nobleton Community Hall is expected to be finalized in the coming months as well.

As the Nobleton project continues to take shape, residents can look forward to a revitalized community space that reflects their aspirations and fosters a sense of belonging and pride.
