Council endorses King Community Climate Action Plan, sets goal of zero emissions by 2050

King Township has taken a major step forward in addressing climate change with the endorsement of the King Community Climate Action Plan (KCCAP). Following extensive community engagement and input, the final draft of the KCCAP was approved by Council during a meeting on Sept. 9.

This plan serves as the Township's roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advancing sustainability goals, with targets set for 35% emission reductions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050.

The KCCAP outlines a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change within the community and is aligned with global standards, including the Partners for Climate Protection program. It supports King Township’s vision of becoming a leader in environmental sustainability and reflects the priorities of the 2023-2026 Corporate Strategic Plan.

Highlights of the King Community Climate Action Plan:

  • King Township declared a climate emergency in 2019, establishing ambitious GHG reduction targets.
  • The KCCAP’s development involved significant community input, including over 1,000 engagement points through surveys, workshops and public events.
  • The plan identifies key actions to address climate change, including emissions reduction milestones and ongoing sustainability initiatives such as waste diversion programs, the establishment of EV charging networks and environmental restoration projects.
  • The Zancor Centre, a new multi-use recreation facility in King Township, will become the first combined aquatics and ice-sports community facility in Canada to achieve to achieve Zero Carbon Building Design Certification by the Canada Green Building Council when it opens early next year.

The plan will guide the Township’s climate action efforts over the coming years, ensuring King remains committed to environmental leadership. Township staff will continue to seek funding opportunities and partnerships to implement the actions outlined in the plan.
