Rural Area Zoning By-law Review
King Township has initiated a review of its zoning for the rural areas and hamlets within the Township, which are currently regulated by the Township’s Comprehensive Zoning By-law 74-53, as amended. The outcome of this review is anticipated to be a new comprehensive Rural Area Zoning By-law. The rural area encompasses the Countryside and Hamlet designations, as well as the Nobleton Village Reserve Lands (shown in yellow, on the map). The rural area excludes the urban Villages of King City, Nobleton and Schomberg.

Virtual Public Open House
King Township is in the final stages of undertaking a review of its zoning for the rural areas of the Township, which are currently regulated by the Township’s Comprehensive Zoning By-law 74-53, as amended and the Oak Ridges Moraine Zoning By-law 2005-23 (applying to lands within the Oak Ridges Moraine Area). A Final Draft Zoning By-law for the Countryside has now been prepared. The rural area encompasses the Countryside and Hamlet designations, as well as the Nobleton Village Reserve Lands (shown in yellow, on the map, right). The rural area excludes the Villages of Nobleton, King City and Schomberg.
All interested persons are invited to join a Virtual Public Open House to learn about the revisions that have been made to the Zoning By-law for the Countryside following public and stakeholder consultation completed in Summer 2021, and to ask questions and provide your feedback on the proposed revisions.
What is a Zoning By-law?
A Zoning By-law is prepared under the requirements of Section 34 of the Planning Act. The Zoning By-law regulates the types of land uses and the character, height, location, size and massing of buildings for all lands in the community.
Why prepare a new Rural Zoning By-law for King Township?
The review of zoning for the rural area follows updates to zoning in the Township’s urban areas (the Villages), through the Nobleton Urban Area Zoning By-law 2016-71 and the King City and Schomberg Urban Area Zoning By-law 2017-66, respectively.
There is a need to review and update the Zoning By-law 74-53 and 2005-23 primarily to ensure that the zoning conforms to local, Regional, and Provincial policy, and addresses the Township’s new Official Plan. We are seeking the community’s input and feedback on the proposed Draft Zoning By-law for the Countryside.
When and where are the Virtual Public Open Houses?
The Virtual Public Open House will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. via a Zoom meeting platform.

Draft Final Zoning By-law for the Countryside Area - November 4, 2021
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this linkA Final Draft Zoning By-law for the Countryside and Interactive Zoning Map have been prepared and posted on the SpeaKING project page. Please note that this Draft By-law will be updated on or before Monday, November 15, 2021 to incorporate the site-specific exemptions (Part 10 of the Draft By-law) for the purpose of the Statutory Public Meeting that has been scheduled for Monday, December 6, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. Additional notice details for the Statutory Public Planning Meeting will be available on Thursday, November 11, 2021.
Revisions to the Draft By-law include:
- The introduction of the Hamlet Institutional (HI) zone, which implements the Township’s Hamlet Institutional land use designation. The Hamlet Institutional (HI) zone permits a range of scaled intuitional uses that are oriented towards the Hamlets.
- The introduction of the Nobleton Village Reserve (VR) zone, which permits a range of agriculture uses within the Nobleton Village settlement area.
- The renaming of the Agricultural Greenbelt (AG) zone to the Greenbelt Natural Heritage (GNH) Zone, which recognizes the Natural Heritage System of the Greenbelt Plan, the York Region’s Official Plan and the Township’s Official Plan. The intent of this zone is to recognize the important natural heritage function of these lands, while continuing to permit appropriate land uses as contemplated by the Official Plan.
- Refinements and minor revisions throughout the Draft Zoning By-law in response to consultation with Township staff, agencies, stakeholders and members of the public to improve interpretation, enhance clarity and offer better accessibility of the document.
