Stormwater Management Master Plan (SWMMP) Update – Coming in 2026

The Township of King is preparing to initiate an update to its Stormwater Management Master Plan (SWMMP) in 2026. At this stage, the scope of work is currently being reviewed and drafted to ensure it reflects the Township’s long-term goals for sustainable stormwater management. Once finalized, the project will be tendered out sometime in 2026.

What is a Stormwater Management Master Plan?

A Stormwater Management Master Plan is a strategic planning document that guides how a municipality manages stormwater runoff across its entire community. It considers:

  • Existing infrastructure such as storm sewers, culverts, and ponds.
  • Environmental protection, including water quality and habitat preservation.
  • Flood risk reduction and climate change resiliency.

The plan uses data, modeling, and best practices to identify priority projects, policies, and programs that maintain and improve stormwater systems over time.

Why is it Important?

Stormwater management is critical for:

  • Reducing flooding risks and protecting public safety.
  • Preventing erosion and property damage.
  • Safeguarding local watercourses and ecosystems.
  • Supporting sustainable development while meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Planning for climate change impacts, such as more frequent and intense storms.

By updating the SWMMP, the Township ensures its infrastructure and policies remain effective, efficient, and environmentally responsible for years to come.

Stay tuned for updates in 2026 as the Township moves forward with this important initiative.
