Following extensive community engagement and input, the final draft of the KCCAP was approved by Council during a meeting on Sept. 9.
This plan serves as the Township's roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advancing sustainability goals, with targets set for 35% emission reductions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050.
The KCCAP outlines a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change within the community and is aligned with global standards, including the Partners for Climate Protection program. It supports King Township’s vision of becoming a leader in environmental sustainability and reflects the priorities of the 2023-2026 Corporate Strategic Plan.
Highlights of the King Community Climate Action Plan:
- King Township declared a climate emergency in 2019, establishing ambitious GHG reduction targets.
- The KCCAP’s development involved significant community input, including over 1,000 engagement points through surveys, workshops and public events.
- The plan identifies key actions to address climate change, including emissions reduction milestones and ongoing sustainability initiatives such as waste diversion programs, the establishment of EV charging networks and environmental restoration projects.
- The Zancor Centre, a new multi-use recreation facility in King Township, will become the first combined aquatics and ice-sports community facility in Canada to achieve to achieve Zero Carbon Building Design Certification by the Canada Green Building Council when it opens early next year.
The plan will guide the Township’s climate action efforts over the coming years, ensuring King remains committed to environmental leadership. Township staff will continue to seek funding opportunities and partnerships to implement the actions outlined in the plan.

Climate Action Plan Update & Next Steps
Share Climate Action Plan Update & Next Steps on Facebook Share Climate Action Plan Update & Next Steps on Twitter Share Climate Action Plan Update & Next Steps on Linkedin Email Climate Action Plan Update & Next Steps linkGood Afternoon All,
Staff wanted to provide an update on the King Climate Action Plan and where it stands currently.
Staff has been busy over the spring and summer developing the plan and moving through a draft of the plan with actions and priorities. As well as carrying out several climate change/ energy/ emission reduction projects. The following will be the plan's expectations moving into the fall of 2021.
1. A Climate Change survey will be circulated on Speaking King for input.
Survey to be released this month- this survey will be open for 3 weeks, and a post notifying of the survey going live will also be added to this page.
2. Draft King Climate Action Plan (KCAP)- with targets, data, and actions to be brought to Council and the sustainability advisory committee for comment and feedback. The expected timeline is Fall- early Q4.
3. Following council feedback and comment there will be a virtual public information session/centre (VPIC) held for additional public comments/feedback on the draft plan. Dependant on health regulations and restrictions, it is tentatively expected that this VPIC will be held virtually.
4. A updated KCAP will be taken back to Council with council, committee and public feedback included in the second half of Q4 for approval. This council appearance is expected to include a presentation from staff on the plan.
Staff looks forward to receiving feedback from the survey and draft plan and moving King towards a greener, cleaner, more resilient low-carbon future.

Both webinars will have minutes taken and/or recorded for public posting following the events.
Webinar 1 will be covering the development of the plan to date, taking time to look at the predicted weather/ climatic trends over the next decade and on as well as more closely talking about the emissions inventory. After preliminary data we can provide some examples of actions and priorities that have been identified by staff, peers and research that are of interest to the township from both a mitigation and adaptation point of view for both near and long term consideration. Following this we will have time for a Q&A and discussion based on feedback from participants.
Webinar 2 will be covering in a condensed form of webinar 1's introduction material, and opening up more public feedback to discuss the perceived risks and impacts of climate change from individuals within our communities perspective. This exercise will help staff to better understand the perceived risks/ impacts from outside the corporate lens. There will be time at the end to discuss recommended targets and what the community feels is appropriate, given that the changes that are needed to be taken on a community level, between King, partners, stakeholders and residents.
